Located between the Norwegian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands are a largely self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Currently, the major political debate on the islands is between those favouring remaining part of the Danish realm and those who favour full independence. As a result of the islands' political status, it is not necessarily bound by the same obligations as Denmark itself, leading to issues with the adoption of the core UN human rights treaties.
